If you're in Portland, Oregon or San Diego, California, you can now access Cycling Directions in the Apple Maps app.

What you need to know

  • Apple has expanded Apple Maps Cycling Directions to Portland and San Diego.
  • The new feature first debuted in iOS 14.
  • Thes two cities join the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York City, London, and several mainland China cities for Cycling Directions support.

With iOS 14, Apple brought several improvements to the Maps app, including more overlays, FlyOver, and more supported countries. Another big addition were Cycling Directions, which provided specific directions for bicyclists with bike lanes, bike paths, and bike-friendly routes, but they were only available in a select number of cities. Today, Apple has expanded support for Apple Maps Cycling Directions to Portland, Oregon and San Diego, California.

Apple revealed the expanded launch by notifying iPhone users in these areas about the availability of Cycling Directions. The notifications first started showing up yesterday. Additionally, notifications were also sent out in the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, London, and Los Angeles, which were locations that already had support for Cycling Directions in Apple Maps. These notifications suggest further expansion of Cycling Direction support in those areas.

If you want to see a full list of where Cycling Directions is supported, along with other features, Apple maintains a list on its website. However, as of this writing, Portland and San Diego are not showing up on the list just yet. We expect it will show up in the next day or two.

With Cycling Directions, users are able to get specific directions while riding their bicycles, which include bike lanes, bike paths, and other bike-friendly routes. Other options for directions in the Apple Maps app include driving, walking, and public transit.
