Adoption of iOS 14 has reportedly crossed the 90% mark.
According to analytics from MixPanel, iOS 14 is now running more than 90% of the iPhones and iPads that are compatible with the latest version of iOS and iPadOS.
As you can see from the graph, adoption initially grew as people upgraded to the iPhone 12 lineup which came with iOS 14 preinstalled. It then flattened out for a bit before skyrocketing over the winter as more people upgraded their devices and upgraded the software on their current devices.
With that trajectory, Apple has seemingly been able to cross 90% adoption of iOS 14 in less than six months, a pretty incredible feat and one of the reasons that developers are attracted to building apps for the App Store. Apple ensures older devices are compatible with the latest version of iOS for as long as possible and that enables developers to take advantage of new technologies that reach more users.
While it's unsure exactly what caused users to upgrade to iOS 14 so quickly, it could be argued that it was one of the iPhone's biggest software releases in years. Features like widgets, the App Library, and home screen customization made it possible for users to customize their iPhone more than ever before.
iOS 15 should be announced at WWDC on June 7, 2021. In addition to announcing the latest software for the iPhone, Apple should also reveal the latest versions of iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS. The company could also announce some hardware, including the rumored Apple silicon iMac and MacBook Pro.
