The 2022 iPhones and Macs may feature 3nm processors - TechnW3

What you need to know

  • The iPhone 14 and 2022 Macs may feature a 3nm chipset.
  • A new report from DigiTimes says the chip could come to the devices as soon as 2022.

Apple is not resting on its laurels with pushing Apple silicon to the next level.

Apple has been using 5nm chip technology for its current products, but the company does not appear to be satisfied with that.

As reported by MacRumors, an upcoming report from DigiTimes says that the iPhone and Mac models released in the back half of 2022 will feature 3nm processors.

TSMC is on track to move its 3nm process technology to volume production in the second half of 2022 for Apple's devices, either iPhones or Mac computers, according to industry sources.

Today's report does fly in the face of an earlier report from Nikkei in July. That report said that, while the next generation of iPads will feature the 3nm chip, the 2022 iPhone is expected to come packed with ta 4nm chip.

Apple's iPad will likely be the first devices powered by processors made using 3-nm technology, sources said. The next generation of iPhones, which are to roll out next year, are expected to make use of the intermediate 4-nm tech for scheduling reasons.

The 2022 iPad Pro is expected to be the first to take advantage of 3nm processor technology, which is expected to boost performance while also benefiting power consumption.

According to TSMC, 3-nm technology can increase computing performance by 10% to 15% compared with 5-nm, while reducing power consumption by 25% to 30%.

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 13 lineup this fall. The company is also heavily rumored to release a redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro by the end of the year.
